My objective for this project was to design two types of infographics that both cover a similar topic. For my first poster, I discussed the positive impact and societal benefits of space exploration through a visualized article, and the second was a comparison infographic that contrasted the United States and the Soviet Union during the Space Race. I wanted to convey a mid-century / retro visual look in order to make the infographics more immersive, because I feel that it was a perfect fit for the subjects being discussed. To do this, I utilized textures and displacements in Photoshop, and illustrative styles that called back to propaganda created during this time period.

I did not have a particular aesthetic or atmosphere I wanted to hit when I first started sketching, so I wanted to cast a wide net and try a bunch of different basic layouts. Considering how broad the topic of "space" is, I at least knew that it gave me many options in the types of infographics I could create. I made sure to keep a potential grid system in mind, as well as how I would like to treat the hierarchy of the information I gathered.
After settling on creating a visualized article and a comparison infographic with the research I gathered, I came to the realization that a mid-century visual style reminiscent of the Space Race era would be a very interesting and fun way to convey the information. With that said, I looked at typefaces that call back to this time period, as well as space-esque typefaces, that I could potentially use as display type.
I still wanted to try out varying ways of dividing the information, and this was particularly challenging with the visualized article. I wanted to divide the information by their overarching topics, but I realized there were more interesting directions I could go if I include statistics and supporting illustrations. I also wanted to keep in mind that I could create a visually compelling layout while still staying true to a consistent grid.
